Boro Rice
Various features of this
variety of rice are as follows :
- Boro rice makes a significant contribution in enhancing the
overall rice production in West Bengal and is grown in Bihar, Assam
and part of Uttar Pradesh and Orissa.
- Boro rice is the main source of livelihood for the farming
community in Assam.
- Boro rice in Assam is largely grown in the Brahmaputra and Barak
river valleys. The two main districts of boro rice cultivation in
Brahmaputra and Barak river valleys are Nagaon and Karimganj.
- During 2000 Assam became self-sufficient in rice through
cultivation of boro and ahu rice.
- Areas under boro rice can be broadly classified into three
categories on the basis of land and water source :
- rainfed swampy, flood prone ecology
- irrigated flood prone ecology
- irrigated flood-free ecology
- Boro rice is crop grown in winter during October-November to
May-June, especially in low-lying areas or river deltas.
- The traditional boro varieties are usually coarse grained.
- This paddy variety takes about 145 to 150 days to grow.
- The incidences of stem borer, leaf blast and neck blast are major
problems in boro rice cultivation due to low temperature in the
vegetative stage.
