Today, a lot of the rice packed and sold in some parts of the country is called basmati though it may not be the actual basmati. In the absence of legal recognition of definition of basmati varieties, however, there is very little that can be done to end this practice. There are few varieties which fulfill the quality norms of real Basmati rice. These are traditional varieties of Basmati rice. There are some other varieties of aromatic rice in grown in different parts of India which are consumed as Basmati Rice. These rices are cross bred or hybrid varieties of Basmati Rice.
Traditional variety mean land races or varieties of rice of uniform shape size and colour traditionally recognised as Basmati and evolved or hybrid variety shall mean a variety whose one of two parent is a traditional variety and which has been recognised as a Basmati variety under any law for the time being in force.
