Organic Rice

Organic rice is rice that is certified by an independent body, to have been grown and processed according to set "organic" standards. For rice to be certified organic the field used must have gone for three years without use of pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, or any chemicals. Then the crop must be grown, harvested, stored, and milled under organic conditions.

Conditions to Grow Organic Rice

While there is no single definition for "organic", most definitions share common elements such as :
  • No synthetic or artificial chemical pesticides and fertilizers have been used.
  • Soil fertility is maintained through "natural" processes such as growing cover crops and/or the application of composted manure and plant wastes.
  • Crops are rotated in fields to avoid growing the same crop year after year in the same field.
  • Alternate (non-chemical forms) of pest control are used to manage insects, diseases and weeds - e.g., beneficial insects to prey on pests, mulches etc.
Usage of Organic products
  • The objective of organic agriculture is to produce nutritious food in a economically viable and environmentally beneficial way.
  • An organic production system is designed to work constructively with natural biological cycles and to operate with minimal external inputs.
  • In order to ensure that the organic system is efficient and sustainable in the long term, sustainable crop rotations, nutrient recycling, encouragement of a rich biodiversity and other management practices are necessary prerequisites.
  • Consumers are turning to organic food because they believe it to be tastier, as well as healthier, both for themselves and the environment.
