Autumn is that part of the season in
the year when the rain is gone and the winter is on its way. Generally,
the Autumn or Pre-Kharif season lasts from March-May to June-October.
The rise that is grown in Autumn is called Autumn rice or pre-kharif
rice. About 7% crop is grown in this season. The varieties grown during
this season are mostly varieties of short duration ranging from 90 to
110 days.
Autumn Rice or Pre-Kharif rice is sown during May to August. However,
the time of sowing slightly differs from state to state according to
weather condition and rainfall pattern. Harvesting of rice is done in
September-October.
Autumn rice crop is known by different names in different parts of
India. For example: it is know as 'Aus' in West Bengal, 'Ahu' in Assam,
'Beali' in Orissa, 'Bhadai' in Bihar, 'Virippu' in Kerala and
'Kuruvai/kar/ Sornavari' in Tamil Nadu.
